Okinawa Week Four (originally posted Dec 30, 2011)

Last Saturday, Christmas Eve we hosted Jake's shop over to our place to celebrate Christmas.  We made appetizers and desserts and goodie bags to go.  Their favorite food at the party was the beer bread and spinach dip.  The one guy asked me if I had gone to school to learn to cook, so I took that as a nice compliment!  Christmas morning we awoke to a rainbow extending across the sky - it was so beautiful!  We skyped home to see some of our gifts opened by others.  After church we headed to the Officers Club for a traditional Christmas day feast!  There was so much food - our favorite was the wild boar BBQ.  We promptly fell into a food coma, but ended the evening on base watching the new Sherlock Holmes movie.  As for our gift giving, along with other things we both ended up giving each other the same gift - a world map to track our adventures across the globe.  Jake had off Monday and Tuesday as well for the holiday.  Monday we went to the Zoo Park for Christmas Fantasy - a mix of laser show, traditional dances, snow making/sledding for the kids (it doesn't snow here naturally!), carnival games - they played both American and Japanese music.  Tuesday we went to Kokusai Street the main shopping district in Naha - it is a maze of little shops and fresh fish/produce markets.  We have been there several times, but always seem to find something we haven't seen before.  After all of our walking we were hungry and ended up at an "Italian" Japanese Restaurant.  It was interesting to taste their take on Italian!  Due to the base being closed for several days, we hadn't gotten any mail for awhile but were presently surprised later in the week when 7 packages and close to twenty Christmas cards arrived!  Thanks everyone!!

This week's Fun Facts:
1.  They do not sell 2-Liter soda bottles here.  We don't know why, but were looking for them for our party and couldn't find them on base or in town.
2.  There are vending machines everywhere - we heard recently that there is 1 machine per every 7 people on the island!
3.  They love the convenience store!  Watch out Sheetz/Wawa/Turkey Hill - the Okinawa Family Mart and Lawson are on almost every corner and sometimes they are both on the same block.
